Preparing for Race Day with the Veloraptors

Preparing for Race Day with the Veloraptors

Race day is an exciting part of being on the Veloraptors team. As part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association and the New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League, our riders participate in cross-country mountain bike races that emphasize effort, perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Preparing properly for a race helps riders feel confident, perform their best, and enjoy the experience. Whether it’s a rider’s first race or their tenth, the basics of preparation remain the same.

Below are some helpful guidelines for getting ready for race day.

1. Prepare Your Bike the Day Before

A reliable bike is one of the most important parts of race preparation. Riders should check their bike the day before the race to avoid last-minute issues.

Key things to check include:

  • Tires inflated properly and free of damage

  • Brakes working smoothly

  • Chain clean and lubricated

  • Shifting working correctly

  • Wheels secured tightly

If anything feels unusual during a pre-race ride, it’s best to address it early rather than waiting until race morning.

2. Pack Your Race Gear

Getting everything ready the night before helps reduce stress on race morning.

Typical race-day gear includes:

  • Helmet

  • Riding jersey and shorts

  • Gloves

  • Eye protection (sunglasses or riding glasses)

  • Cycling shoes

  • Water bottles or hydration pack

  • Snacks and recovery food

It can be helpful to pack a small gear bag so everything is in one place and easy to find.

3. Fuel Your Body

Good nutrition helps riders perform their best during a race.

The night before the race, riders should focus on:

  • Eating a balanced dinner

  • Drinking plenty of water

  • Getting a good night’s sleep

On race morning, a light breakfast 1–3 hours before the race is ideal. Good options include:

  • Oatmeal

  • Toast with peanut butter

  • Fruit

  • Yogurt

  • Eggs

Hydration is also important. Riders should sip water throughout the morning rather than waiting until the start line.

4. Arrive Early at the Race Venue

Arriving early allows riders time to settle in and prepare without feeling rushed.

Typical race-day activities include:

  • Team check-in with coaches

  • Course preview or pre-ride (if allowed)

  • Rider staging and race number pickup

  • Warm-up ride before the race start

Coaches will help guide riders through the race-day schedule so everyone knows where to be and when.

5. Warm Up Before the Start

A short warm-up helps riders prepare their body for the effort ahead.

A typical warm-up might include:

  • Easy pedaling for 10–15 minutes

  • A few short bursts of harder effort

  • Light stretching

The goal is to raise the heart rate gradually so the rider is ready when the race begins.

6. Ride Smart and Race with Respect

NICA racing is built on the principles of sportsmanship, respect, and rider development.

During races, riders should:

  • Ride within their ability level

  • Pass safely and courteously

  • Follow course markings and race official instructions

  • Encourage teammates and other riders

Every rider on the course is working hard, and showing respect for fellow competitors is part of what makes the NICA community special.

7. Recover After the Race

Once the race is finished, recovery is important.

Riders should:

  • Cool down with a short easy ride if possible

  • Drink water or electrolyte drinks

  • Eat a recovery snack or meal

  • Stretch and relax

Many races also include team time afterward, where riders cheer for teammates and celebrate everyone’s effort.

Enjoy the Experience

Race day is about much more than finishing times or podium places. It’s about pushing yourself, supporting teammates, and being part of an incredible youth mountain biking community.

The Veloraptors are proud to race as part of the NJ NICA league, where every rider is encouraged to do their best, learn from the experience, and most importantly—have fun on the trails.

We look forward to seeing our riders prepared, confident, and ready to race.
